Game Recap

The 53rd annual Sword game between Chicopee High School and Chicopee Comprehensive took place on Thanksgiving morning at Dan Dulchinos field behind Chicopee Comp. With the ending of the annual Thanksgiving Day matchup between Chicopee High and Holyoke High, the decision was made to move the Sword game to Thanksgiving. While the day had changed, the results for the Colts remained the same as they had the past three seasons as they went home to enjoy their turkey and stuffing following a 21-12 victory.

Isaias Gomez probably didn’t have much room for food when he got home however after the Colts continued to feed him the ball, rushing for 208 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Through the air Nathan Lepage had a steady game for the hosts, completing eight of 19 attempts for 117 yards. The output wasn’t impressive but it was enough to keep the Pacers from being able to stack the box in an effort to stop the running game.

Chicopee’s Dylan Conover opened the scoring on High second drive. Following two long passing plays to Jerome Jacobs (40 yards) and Stevie Matta (34 yards), Conover finished the drive with runs of seven and two yards before a two-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Ricky Elmer’s PAT attempt went wide left to leave the score at 6-0.

The Colts allowed Gomez to provide their rebuttal to the opening score as they drove 54 yards on six runs, all by Gomez. Finishing off the drive with a 21-yard scamper into the end zone. A failed two-point conversion by the colts left the score tied at 6-6 but it wouldn’t be for long.

An interception of Conover by Junior Adam Lebeau setup the Colts at the Pacer 24 that Gomez covered in two plays of 23 and 1 yard. This time Jonathan Lewis was able to convert the two-point conversion to make it 14-6. All of this occurring before the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter the teams began to settle in until Lepage fumbled the center/QB exchange at his own 34 with 3:47 in the second. The Pacers recovered and made the most of their short field when Conover found Matta for a 34-yard TD pass on the first play of the drive. Another fail two-point conversion would leave the score at 14-12, which would be as close as the Pacers would get.

Lepage found Rafael Santiago on a 29-yard slant route with about 90 seconds to go in the half. Lepage’s PAT kick provided the final 21-12 margin.

The Pacers finished the season at 5-6 while the Colts improved to 4-6.
